Project description

Lean vs. Agile? Improving the existing vs. exploring the new? This is the dilemma that companies often have to face. Traditionally, organizations have adopted an either/or approach to address this dilemma. Accordingly, leaders were required to understand the characteristics of the decision-making context in order to adopt the most appropriate response. However, a third approach can be considered: moving from an either Lean or Agile approach to a both Lean and Agile approach to both improve the existing and explore the new. The dilemma becomes a paradox, fueling tensions in the company to make the conflict between improving and exploring explicit. The purpose of this study is to investigate how leadership mindset and dual strategic, organizational and behavioral models must change to embrace this paradox.

The more and more frequent disruptive changes challenge manufacturing firms to become more and more ambidextrous. To face this challenge, organizations are looking with interest at ways of combining lean and agile paradigms. The purpose of this study is to investigate how manufacturing firms are adapting their organizational infrastructures to support the integration between lean and agile paradigm.
